Alpine Cartography Field School 2022

Between September 26th and October 5th 2022, the Alpine Cartography Field School (ACFS) took place in Ramsau/Dachstein (Austria) already for the 11th time since the start of the International Cartography M.Sc. programme in 2011. Another “Corona year” involved again some restrictions and special requirements in order to make the annual ten-day field school nevertheless happen.

Altogether, 19 students of the international Cartography Master programe and eight students of the Geoinformation Technologies Master programme were exposed to topics like map-reading, field-mapping, cartographic suryeving as well as the peculiarities and special problems of high-mountain cartography. Other topics covered during the ACFS were for example tangible relief/landscape models, mobile weather mapping, laser scanning, panoramic landscape depiction, orienteering, mental maps, glaciology and mobile devices.

In addition to the professional programme there was also enough time for leisure activities in the beautiful surroundings of Ramsau. The casual “Jause” dinner at sunset high up in the mountains will remain in the memory of all participants!
