Social Activities after the semester start at TUD

Hiking in the Saxon Switzerland NP

The Saxon Switzerland National Park (Nationalpark Sächsische Schweiz) is only a 45-minute train ride away from Dresden main station and was the location of the first social activity at TU Dresden after semester start – a pleasant hike a bit off the beaten track through the unique sandstone landscape including an outdoor snack break. The weather conditions were rather wet this year which lead to a sometimes almost mystical foggy atmosphere in the colorful fall forest. Special thanks to the German Cartographic Society (DGfK) for sponsoring the event!

Brewery visit

After a “Corona break” in 2020 the traditional brewery visit was the second social activity in Dresden. We visited the Watzke brewery and could taste their home brewed beer specialties. Barend Köbben, local coordinator of the programme of the University of Twente was also part of the group that evening.

Hiking in the Eastern Ore Mountains

Another excursion – this time in perfect weather conditions – followed in early November. A small group of seven students hiked along to the top of the Eastern Ore mountains (Osterzgebirge) located about 30 kilometers south of Dresden. Starting in the mountain town of Altenberg we “climbed” the adjacent Kahleberg mountain, took a loop into Czech Republic and finally got to Kohlhaukuppe mountain with its famous garlic restaurant on top. Everybody enjoyed different garlic dishes and on the way back to Dresden many other people could also “enjoy” the nice scent in the train 🙂
