Impact of COVID-19 on open-wheel motorsport in 2020
“The hardest race in the history of motorsport”
What it is about
The video retells the story of how COVID-19 has made an impact on the main motorsport series of the world. Being a highly global, international sport, Formula 1, Formula E, IndyCar Series, and other racing events faced drastic changes and crisis during the 2020. The expected geography of the championships got disrupted uniquely, so we saw an amazing opportunity to come up with exciting story, providing multiple animated maps along with the footage and media reports.
How we built it
The figure below is showing our workflow.
The racing calendars were obtained from various Wikipedia articles and then geocoded. Various circuits polylines were obtained from OpenStreetMap preprocessed with QGIS / GDAL. Google Earth was also used to automate geocoding or redraw different locations for the animation. Corona data was obtained from Johns Hopkins. The data visualization of the obtained data has been implemented using predefined styles, labels and animations within the GeoLayers package for Adobe After Effects.

Challenges we ran into
The scale of work turned out to be significantly underestimated, therefore the most important planned functionality got declined.
What we're proud of
Despite the absence of a large team we managed to arrange a relatively full-fledged content with a corresponding story and maps. Despite the obstacles, we were able to meet the deadline and provide the completed project.
What we learned
We have gained an understanding of what the process of creating a typical video mapping project looks like and now we realize what resources and knowledge we need to have in order to do such projects quickly, interestingly, productively and profitably.
What's next
We plan to continue to engage in cartographic video visualizations on different topics.
The cartographic animation is created with the GeoLayers plugin for Adobe AE. The included presets make animation smooth, of high-quality and cinematic.
Final project of the 13-minute story with sequences, audios, map compositions and stock footage.
