Which Spain is Calling You?
“A tool to choose where to move or where to be a tourist within Spain.”
What it is about
This project analyzes Spanish city life by integrating official statistics (INE, Ministries) with open-source and private digital metrics (e.g., LinkedIn, Idealista, IGN, Open Street Maps). Focusing on Spain's appeal for tourism and migration [1][2], the methodology creates a comparable municipal index by normalizing diverse demographic, safety, hazard, mobility, job, and housing market data.
How we built it
Designed for migrants and tourists, this D3 javascript-based web map integrates government and scraped data. Socio-economic metrics combine GDP, up-to-date LinkedIn jobs, and dual housing costs (Idealista/Airbnb). Infrastructure analysis models transport accessibility via ArcGIS/OSM, alongside water and recycling indices. Environmental quality uses Google Earth Engine and Sentinel-2 for green space quantification. Safety and demographics utilize census data and crime rates.
Challenges we ran into
Major challenges included sourcing consistent data, resolving visualization clustering issues, and normalizing complex metrics for single-variable representation.
What we're proud of
Our project aids migrants and tourists with an intuitive, updateable interface. High personalization minimizes city-name bias, helping users find locations that truly match their preferences and needs.
What we learned
We learned about advanced CSS, audio and vibration integration in JS, and the complexities of scraping and aggregating unorganized datasets from various sources.
What's next
The project can be expanded by adding dynamic data updating, and improving functionality with navigation tools and updated details on other aspects of transport, culture, and services.
