The Walk map of English Garden was made with the intention of creating predefined circular walking routes throughout the park. The main aim is to reduce the decision-making time and inform the enthusiasts of the main attractions and the nearest public transport they will come across during the walk. Our objectives include making a simplistic yet eye-catching map of the English garden, which focuses on the various scenic routes that can be traversed for a relaxing stroll through the park. We also included the most famous monuments within the park.
A Walk in the English Garden
“The ultimate urban greenspace escape from the city life hustle in Munich.”
What it is about
How we built it
As most digital mapping origin stories go, we started in QGIS software. We used both ArcGIS Pro and QGIS software to build our map for English Garden. The polygon and line data of the garden was sourced from the OSM database. Our goal was to generalize the map as much as possible to emphasize only the tracks and make an interactive web map out of it. The final Web Map was made using HTML, JavaScript, and CSS programming languages. Leaflet framework is used for visualizing the map and GitHub platform was used to host our website.
Challenges we ran into
Coding was relatively new for us and during the course of the first semester, we learned the basics, so learning many of the functions and how to integrate them from scratch has been a challenge.
What we're proud of
We are proud of our web map which seemed like an unsurmountable challenge in the beginning. Adding navigation and measurement features is an achievement for us.
What we learned
We learned about leaflet and flexible visualization of a web pages. Besides technical skills, we learned the importance of having a plan for project execution, division of labor and sheer optimism and confidence that we will be able to work it out in the end.
What's next
We would like to add the option of Customization of walking paths instead of predetermined paths and increase the scope of our project to include other greenspaces in and around Munich. Also, it can be opened up to the public and create a niche forum website for walks in quiet nature near urban centers.
