Hands-on learning through creative projects: First semester “Mapping Projects” at TUM

The first semester of the MSc Cartography programme at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) concluded with a creative and technical highlight: The “Mapping Project” presentations for the winter semester 2024/2025.

This course challenges students to go beyond theory, leave their comfort zone and apply their cartographic knowledge to real-world topics through data visualization, design, and digital media. Additionally, the course is structured to encourage collaboration and peer learning, allowing our diverse student cohort to exchange their knowledge and build strong connections. And once again, our students delivered outstanding results!

Each student group from the 14th intake developed their own project from scratch, focusing on a topic of personal or professional interest. They worked collaboratively to explore different visualization techniques, prototype solutions, and design interactive, multimedia-based map products.

From engaging web applications to detailed posters and even introductory videos, the results were as diverse as they were impressive. Every group built a dedicated website to document their journey and showcase the final product. Explore the interactive vernissage and dive into the student projects.

This course is more than just map-making—it’s about building essential skills in problem-solving, teamwork, and communication, while deepening students’ technical expertise across a range of cartographic tools and media.

A huge congratulation to all first-semester students on their successful Mapping Projects! Your creativity, innovation, and dedication truly stood out. We’re proud of what you’ve achieved—and excited to see how you’ll continue growing as future cartographers.
