Between September 30th and October 9th 2025 the Alpine Cartography Field School (ACFS) took place in Ramsau/Dachstein (Austria) already for the 14th time since the start of the International Cartography M.Sc. programme in 2011.
Altogether, 31 students of the international Cartography M.Sc. and four students of the Geoinformation Technologies M.Sc. programmes were exposed to topics like map-reading, field-mapping, cartographic surveying as well as the peculiarities and special problems of high-mountain cartography. Other topics covered during the ACFS were for example tangible relief/landscape models, mobile weather mapping, OpenStreetMap, laser scanning, panoramic landscape depiction, orienteering, mental maps, glaciology and mobile devices.
The highlight of the excursion was the visit of the Dachstein Glacier. In perfect weather conditions the students were able to experience and study a glacier with its changes at the spot.
In addition to the professional programme there was also enough time for leisure activities in the beautiful surroundings of Ramsau. The casual “Jause” dinner at sunset high up in the mountains will remain in the memory of all participants!
